The Liberty Theatre in Astoria has become a prime example of successful venue reinvention. Two decades ago, the 1920s vaudeville house was decaying. Today, it is a restored landmark and a financial success. Since Executive Director Jennifer Crockett took over ten years ago, the operating budget has surged from $340,000 to $1.5 million.
Hosting over 150 events annually, the venue now attracts 30,000 patrons. The business model relies on a mix of ticket sales, donations, and commercial rentals. Even the 18-month COVID shutdown was used strategically to complete a $2 million roof replacement and technical upgrades.
Beyond big-ticket concerts, the theater focuses on community impact through the 'Kids Make Theatre' program. With a professional team of 19 staff members, the Liberty proves that combining artistic passion with retail-style business acumen is the key to modern theater management.
